Offenbach Demolish Bayern at the 1974 Bundesligaauftakt

1. August 1974. First matchday of the Bundesliga – and a result that wrote football history.

The reigning European Cup Winners' Cup holders from Munich arrived with world champions like Sepp Maier, Franz Beckenbauer, Uli Hoeneß and Gerd Müller. But on this afternoon, the big stage belonged solely to the Kickers from Offenbach.

Winfried Schäfer opened the scoring, Dieter Schwemmle made it 2-0 before half-time. Anyone expecting a reaction from Bayern instead witnessed an Offenbach football frenzy.

Erwin Kostedde scored shortly after the restart and again later for his second. Sigfried Held completed the debacle, before Egon Bihn added the sixth goal shortly before the final whistle.

6-0 against the mighty FC Bayern.

Offenbach played with courage, passion and no respect whatsoever for their opponent's famous names. A historic triumph that remains one of the greatest moments in the club's history to this day.

Six goals. A sensation. An afternoon for the ages.
